Ruth’s Story
Ruth is a 21-year-old mother who had three children all under the age of five and was abandoned by her husband after the birth of her third child. On her own, Ruth struggled to provide for her family, and her children unfortunately suffered from acute malnutrition due to their circumstances. Ruth’s youngest child unfortunately died at just 3 months old due to severe malnutrition. A Village Health Team (VHT), was able to bring this case to Goshen’s attention so that they could aid Ruth in her time of need. Goshen’s was able to address the malnutrition in Ruth’s children with nutritious porridge mixtures. Not only was adequate nutrition provided but Goshen’s also was able to help Ruth by going to her home to provide education on hygiene, sanitation, and help her start a garden. The education and training on gardening that Ruth was given not only helps with her family's health and nutrition, but promotes her economic empowerment and sustainability. A garden can not only grow nutritious vegetables, but can also generate income for her family. Ruth was also provided with proper mosquito nets for her and her family. Ruth is no longer alone in her pursuit to improve the health and well-being of her family. Goshens was able to address the critical needs of Ruth’s children, as well as encourage and empower Ruth in her time of need.
